Sometimes I can feel my ass to work, but sometimes it is just trunks my knees and I can not tell her I work my ass. What could go wrong.

A line drawn thru your shoulders should go strait down thru your ankles as you descend. That is, the bar should remain directly over your feet.
The execution: With the bar on the rack. Rest the bar on across the back of your shoulders. Hold the bar for balance. Raise it off the rack & step away.
Keep your head up & back straight, bend your knees & lower yourself until your thighs are just lower than parallel to the floor.
You need to go below parallel to effect serious butt gains.

Sounds like your form is wrong. Stand with feet hip-width apart and squat, keeping back straight, abs in and knees behind your toes. Squat to a sitting position and squeeze butt to stand up. Repeat for 2-3 sets of 8-12 reps and add weights for more intensity. *** Make sure you are paying attention to your form with each squat and breath. Hope this helps
